Summer may not have officially begun, but it sure feels like it with partially sunny skies which can be observed on the majority of the week. This makes it a great time to enjoy a local activity like island hopping or eating fruits in season like watermelons. On a less positive note, motorists are cautioned against passing through Ouano Ave. due to roadwork that will start this week.

A sunny first week of March

People can look forward to partly sunny skies.

Locals and tourists in Cebu can expect good weather on the first week of March. There will be partly sunny skies with rain showers in the morning on most days of the week. A couple of thunderstorms are in the forecast for Friday, March 9 but the weather is expected to be better over the weekend. Minimum temperature is at 31 ºC while maximum temperature is at 33 ºC. It is advisable to bring an umbrella, which can be used either rain or shine.

Motorists are advised to avoid Ouano Ave. as roadwork covering three lanes will begin this week. [1] The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will start the Ouano Ave. rehabilitation project by replacing the asphalt with thick concrete. [2] The first phase covers Mahiga Creek up to Mantawi Drive. [3] Because of this, the road will be closed at 7:00 AM. Drivers heading to Cebu City may take alternate routes in Subangdaku, Banilad, and Panagdait, while north-bound motorists can take Pope John Paul II Ave. [4] Motorists can also take Zuellig Ave. and Larrazabal St. which will serve as diversion roads. To ensure a smooth flow of traffic, a strict no-parking policy will be implemented on these areas.

The first phase of the Ouano Ave. rehabilitation project is expected to be complete in three months. The contractor of the project aims to finish the six-phase project in one year.

Summer-ready food and activities

Fruit in season: watermelon

Watermelon makes for a great summer snack.

As temperatures rise, one way to keep yourself hydrated is to eat watermelons. Not only is it over 90% water, but it is also packed with vitamin C and helps in having healthy skin and hair.

You can eat a slice of watermelon straight off the fruit or put a slice in the freezer for a quick and healthy cold treat. Watermelon is sold by the kilo or pre-sliced in fruit stands, grocery stores, and public markets in Cebu City.

Local activity: island hopping

Fair weather at this time of the year makes it a good time to go island hopping around Cebu. From Mactan Island, you can hop on a boat and visit Olango Island which is famous spot for bird-watching. Next, there’s Nalusuan Island which is notable for its well-preserved marine sanctuary. For those who want to swim or snorkel, there’s Pandanon Island with its white sand beach. Other islands worth visiting are Pescador Island in Moalboal, and Sumilon Island in Oslob.
