A grand vaccination was started last Thursday, December 9, until the end of the month by the Cebu City Government in its efforts to attain herd immunity by the end of the year 2021.

Almost 93% percent of the residents of Cebu City had already received their first dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus, head of Cebu City Health Department Dr. Jeffrey Ibones said. [1]

Last Thursday, the Cebu City Government launched 22 pop-up vaccination sites in the following barangays of the city: Apas, Bulacao, Busay, Calamba, Duljo, Guadalupe, Hipodromo, Iconique Mall on Colon St., Inayawan, Kalunasan, Kamputhaw, Labangon, Lahug, Luz, Mabolo, Mambaling, Punta, Quiot, San Nicolas Proper, Talamban, Tejero, and Tisa. Last December 10, the pop up vaccination sites were placed in barangays Apas, Bulacao, Calamba, Duljo, Guadalupe, Inayawan, Kalunasan, Labangon, Lahug, Luz, Mabolo, Mambaling, Poblacion Pardo, Punta, San Nicolas Proper, Talamban, Tinago, and Tisa. And last December 11, the vaccination sites were hosted in barangays Bacayan, Bulacao, Guadalupe, Inayawan, Kalunasan, Kamputhaw, Labangon, Lahug, Luz, Mabolo, Mambaling, Poblacion Pardo, Suba, Talamban, and Tisa, where residents can get vaxxed. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama ordered these pop-up vaccination sites to be established so that senior citizens and persons with disabilities will be encouraged and further persuaded to get their vaccine. Fully vaccinated shall be prioritized, followed by the partially vaccinated, in the disbursement of the city government’s financial aid.

Cebu City is not allowed to be upgraded to Alert Level 1 if the percentage of the elderly population who are vaccinated will not reach 50%.

Ibones is hopeful that Cebu City will achieve herd immunity through this government effort before the year ends. During the second national vaccination days from December 15 to December 17, Ibones said they target 7,000 doses of vaccine to be given daily. The city government also urges those who have already been inoculated with the first dose to return for their vaccination schedule for the second dose on the upcoming second National Vaccination Day.

Another government initiative on doubling the efforts of the vaccination campaign is through the mayor’s order for all non-essential establishments in Cebu City to serve and prioritize fully vaccinated residents starting January 1, 2022. [3]

Cebu City’s efforts in battling the pandemic

Recently, Cebu City was tagged as the best local government unit in the region with best practices for COVID-19 Center during the first Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Health Summit at Bai Hotel. [4]

The said recognition was spearheaded by the Department of Health-7, while the Cebu City Emergency Operation Center bagged the award, with Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu cities being outdone.
