In the Philippines, the month of May is known for all things beautiful—Mother’s Day, flowers, Flores de Mayo, and the last chance to have a vacation escapade before school starts again by June. May also marks the dawn of the rainy season by the end of the month, and, to some, the start of preparations for another school year. If you are about to finalize your shopping budget for this month, take a look at the following best purchases for May.

From gowns to fruits, or more summer apparel or rain gears, ShoppersGuide will help you decide on the best things to buy that go in line with the activities you have in mind for this month.

Back-to-School Supplies

It’s back to school for most students. For those whose schools didn’t adapt the calendar shift, June remains the start of the school calendar. This means that May is the time for the ever fun-task of back-to-school shopping. From uniforms to bags and notebooks down to pens, every student enjoys choosing this year’s battle gear. Watch out for sales and discounts here and there from mid-month sales in department stores. Better yet, scout for great deals in Divisoria and Baclaran for the best deals all year round.

Gowns for the Santacruzan

Who didn’t dream of being crowned as Reyna Elena during their town’s Sagala or Santacruzan? It was every girl’s dream growing up – to be part of this annual pageant of belles done in honor of the Virgin Mary during the Flores de Mayo festival. The parade of the cross, as some people would call it, usually happens every end of May in almost all towns all over the country, so the earlier you buy a gown or reserve a gown rental, the cheaper it would cost you. And as a bonus, you can have a whole rack to yourself as you pick out your choice.

Mother's Day Gifts

It’s that time of the year again to celebrate the most important woman in our lives. Although every day can be mom’s day, giving them something special on the day declared just for them would be, of course, just wonderful. So if you are still thinking of what to give them or how to spend the occasion, check out these few suggestions:

Day at the spa — Moms work hard every single day of the year, so, even for one day, they deserve to be treated like queens. Accompany your mom to the spa or to the salon and have some mother-daughter bonding, your mom will definitely treasure it for sure.

Book a hotel room with free dinner and treats — Majority of the hotels in Metro Manila will be offering promos and Mother’s Day blowouts during that weekend. You can give your mom some “me” time with a staycation at the hotel of her choice.

Fancy dinner for a fancy lady — Most restaurants will also have promos and deals for families celebrating Mother’s Day. Make the most out of it by scoring free desserts, half the price buffets, and pre-set meals when you eat with your mom.

Shop for jewelries, bags, shoes, and make up — Because the celebration doesn’t stop with meals and massages, give your mom something she can take home and use every day. Many brands will also be having sales and special discounts for Mother’s day gifts.

Fruits in Season: Mango and Macopa

Just like the vibrant colors of summer, these red and yellow colored fruits are in season during the month of May. Make sure to buy in bulk to enjoy generous servings of shakes, desserts, and coolers that will help you survive the intense summer heat. Indulge in Macopa and be refreshed by its watery crunchy texture that will surely be the taste of your summer.

Since it is the peak season of these fruits, their prices are relatively cheaper this time of the year. Mangos are at PhP80 per kilo (source: DTI pricelist). One foolproof trick to spot the sweet ones? Smell the top of the surface of the mango. The sweeter it smells, the sweeter it would probably taste.
