Sometimes the best news to hear about is that a long weekend is just around the corner. Well, you can look forward to just that because Monday, August 29, is declared a regular holiday in celebration of the National Heroes’ Day! So relax, unwind, and make the most of your time off. Make it a weekend well spent with the help of our list of exciting attractions for August 26 to 28.


Movies

Max and friends go on an adventure in New York City in The Secret Life of Pets.

If you’ve ever wondered what your pets are up to when you’re not around, you can find out their shenanigans in the animated comedy The Secret Life of Pets. The movie follows Max, a Jack Russell Terrier, whose comfortable life drastically changes when his owner Katie adopts another dog named Duke. Trouble ensues, and Max’s friends embark on a mission to save them both. The Secret Life of Pets will be shown in cinemas starting August 24.

The lovely ladies of 'Camp Sawi'

Moviegoers who are into romantic comedy films might want to head to Camp Sawi, in cinemas August 24. The movie title is the name of a resort where five ladies check in to try to move on from a broken heart. But with a hunky camp master around, falling in love again might prove to be the real challenge. The cast includes Andi Eigenmann, Arci Muñoz, Bela Padilla, Yassi Pressman, Kim Molina, and Sam Milby.


Theater


Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas kicks off their 41st theater season with Ang Katatawanan ng Kalituhan. The play is the Filipino adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. It tells the story of twin brothers who were separated at birth and later reunited by chance. What follows is a case of mistaken identity, and a whole lot of hilarity.

'Ang Katatawanan ng Kalituhan', a Filipino adaptation of Shakespeare’s play





The play will be shown from now until September 11 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor Palma Hall, U.P. Diliman, Quezon City. Regular ticket prices cost PhP500.

Billy tries to connect with his family despite his disability in 'Tribes'.

On the other hand, Tribes is a story about a family with a member who is hearing-impaired. Billy’s family has failed to adopt sign language in their household, so he must find a way for his voice to be heard.

Tribes will be shown from now until September 4 at the Power Mac Spotlight Center, Circuit Lane at Circuit, Makati. On August 27, the play will have “surtitles,” or words projected onto the stage for both hearing and hearing-impaired audiences to enjoy the show. Tickets are at PhP1,254 for Platinum seating and PhP1,881 for Premium seating and are available at TicketWorld.

'Kahapon… Ngayon' is both a concert and album launching for Martin Nievera.

Concert King Martin Nievera pays tribute to traditional Filipino love songs in The Best of Martin Nievera: Kahapon… Ngayon this August 26, 7:30 PM at the Kia Theatre. He will also release his new album with the same name on this day. Ticket prices are from PhP1,060 to PhP3,000 and are available at TicketNet.

The Friends of Distinction will bring back their fans to the hippie days of the ‘60s.

Those who fondly remember the ‘60s and ‘70s can head to the Friends of Distinction concert happening at the Mall of Asia Arena this August 26, 8:00 PM. The California band is known for their hits “Grazing in the Grass,” “Love or Let Me Be Lonely,” and “Going in Circles.” They last performed in the Philippines in 2004. Tickets range from PhP2,120 to PhP8,480 and are available through SM Tickets in all SM Mall cinemas and online at www.smtickets.com.


Art Display

Rocks are turned into artwork in the Instinctual Creation exhibit.

Sculptures made out of green quartz, granite, and silica rocks can be seen in the Instinctual Creation exhibit at the Bulwagang Fernando Amorsolo (Small Gallery) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CPP). This is the first sculpture exhibit for artist Ryan Rubio, who mostly does paintings. The exhibit runs from now until September 11.

Admission is free to CPP art galleries. CPP is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Tuesday to Sunday.
