It’s officially August and only just a month away before the start of the “Ber months.” The weather will be persistently rainy all week, heavy traffic is expected. This week’s activities include the World Food Expo from August 2 to 5 and the Cinemalaya, which begins on August 4.


Start of the Buwan ng Wika Pambansa

August 1 marks the start of the Buwan ng Wika as declared by the government by virtue of Proclamation 1041. The theme for this year is “Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago.” The celebration of Buwan ng Wika flourished in 1997 during President Fidel V. Ramos’ term.

The biggest food show in the Philippines is set to happen from August 2 to 8 at two of the biggest convention centers in the country: SMX Convention Center and World Trade Center. Besides watching The Philippine Culinary Cup, guests can also learn from chefs, hoteliers and culinary experts in series of seminars. Food stalls are also available for guests to visit and wearing business attire is a must. Shuttles are offered to escort guests to both venues.

Cloudy skies and heavy thunderstorms lasting through the afternoon can be expected throughout the week. Light rain has a high chance of occurring in the morning of July 31 and might persist throughout the entire day. Meanwhile on August 1 and 2, the chances for rain are lower save for some drizzle in the afternoon. The remaining days of the week have more than 50% chance of rain. It is advisable to wear jackets for the cold breeze and be cautious when driving on wet roads.


LANY in Ayala Malls

After performing last March at the Wanderland music festival, the American alternative band LANY is coming back to the Philippines for a series of mall shows on Ayala Malls from August 4 to 6. Show passes can only be purchased through buying four Glorietta Cinema gift cards worth PhP250 each. LANY is behind the song “ILYSB.”


“Work From Home” bill proposed to lessen Manila traffic

Camarines Sur representative Luis Raymund Villafuerte Jr is proposing a new decree that will ease the commuting efforts of employees. Villafuerte is pushing for the implementation of the House Bill 5630, which allows employees to work from home to avoid heavy traffic particularly during bad weather. The law however, does not affect the rules of the employment status but rather on the work environment. When applied, the act can help persons with disabilities and people living in remote areas.


13th Cinemalaya Film Festival

High caliber independent films will be showing on CCP theaters and Ayala malls starting from August 4 until August 13. There are a total of nine movies produced by local directors and writers. One of the movie entries is the comedy film Ang Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha, which is Megastar, Sharon Cuneta’s first Cinemalaya entry. Other celebrities with entries are Jake Cuenca, Kean Cipriano, Alfred Vargas, and Abra. The screening schedules and complete list of venues can be checked at the Cinemalaya website.
