safety precautions during rainy season

Entering the rainy season means saying goodbye to days of sweltering heat, unbelievable humidity, and threats of heatstroke. With the start of the wet season, the time for beaches, sunbathing, and maybe even epic summer romances will have to wait for another year. Thick sweaters come out of hiding and getting out of bed in the morning becomes ten times harder all because of the cooler weather.

While the following months might also bring you a more comfortable night’s sleep, it does come with a rather major backlash. During this season, illnesses become much more rampant as the immune system grows weaker or shuts down altogether. Since you are now an adult who has priorities to attend to and things to get done, taking a day off is out of the question. Read on to discover simple health and safety precautions during the rainy season to keep you in tip top shape.

1. Always have rain gear with you.

Being prepared for the (rain) battle will help you in the long run.

Your mom probably always used to remind you to carry around complete rain equipment or at least an umbrella. And even though you are now an adult, it doesn’t cancel the fact that your mom is always right. Getting wet from a sudden downpour is proven to create a change in your body temperature which will likely lead to colds and a fever. In today’s day and age, the motto “come prepared”, no matter the situation, is always a good idea.

2. Wash your hands religiously.

Hand washing should always be done with warm water and soap.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that being hygienic and dutifully washing your hands are huge factors in remaining healthy. These will prevent you from becoming sick because of viruses and bacteria which are more rampant during the season. So wherever you will go to or whatever it is you will do, washing your hands should become a habit. A friendly reminder though, proper handwashing must be done with warm water and soap to effectively get rid of the said viruses.

3. Mind what you eat.

The adage “You are what you eat” couldn’t be more true when it comes to health.

The immune system being more susceptible to illnesses during this time should prompt you to be more mindful of what you put into your body. Load up on fresh fruits and vegetables to give yourself a fighting chance against sickness. Also steer clear of any unsanitary street food as they can become contaminated with airborne diseases which can cause you a stomachache, or even worse, diarrhea.

4. Stay hydrated.

Water is indeed your best friend, especially during the monsoon weather.

One simple, very doable trick to stay at the top of your health game despite the rainy weather is to drink more water than you normally do. Not only will this help boost your immune system, but it can also elevate your energy levels and lessen fatigue. Since waterborne diseases are also widespread during this particular time, make sure you only drink purified or boiled water, and avoid consuming any water from unsure sources.

5. Keep your surroundings clean and tidy.

A well-kept home also gives you a healthy body.

One of the dangers of the season that you should be wary about is dengue fever. Some species of mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant, dirty water, which are very common during this time. Another illness to watch out for is leptospirosis that comes from water contaminated with animal urine such as rats and other infected animals. Make sure that your surroundings are clear of any stagnant water. Having antibacterial spray around your home is also a good idea since it can reduce much more bacteria than your standard soap and water.

The rainy season calls for you to always keep your guard up and take care of yourself. And with the steps mentioned on how to remain healthy and happy as cooler temperatures set in, you are set to have a smooth sailing couple of months ahead of you.
