While July only had a handful of live shows and concerts, this month a diverse set of performers will dominate the Metro Manila concert scene. The performers are varied, and there’s definitely something for everyone! Your grandparents can sing along with John Ford Cole while your aunt and uncles can relieve the 80s and early 90s through Ogie Alcasid and Workshy. Meanwhile, millennials can dance to Halsey and Chance The Rapper and Gen Y can enjoy Why Don’t We’s performance. This is just a preview of the entrainment options; keep reading to discover all the concerts in Metro Manila for August 2018!


1. Timeless Hits: John Ford Coley of England Dan & John Ford Coley

Older generations grew up listening to love songs and ballads. And while we welcome the newer music styles, it is undeniable that older songs are timeless and relevant. This can be seen in the continuing support of classic artists. And for this month, John Ford Coley of the tandem John Ford Coley and England Dan is coming to Manila again after performing in a series of mall shows last year.

Although England Dan passed away nine years ago, Coley will continue to perform their memorable mellow love songs of the 70s such as “It’s Sad To Belong,” “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight,” and “Love Is The Answer.”

How to get to Newport Performing Arts Theatre: Take the MRT-3 to Taft Avenue Station. Go down along the northbound side and take a left. You should see a McDonald’s. There’s a passageway near the chain where you can ride a white Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal (NAIA) 3 loop shuttle. Ride the bus and get off at Resorts World Manila and head to Newport Mall. The Newport Performing Arts Theater is on the third floor.




2. Halsey

You might have already heard Halsey’s voice, as she is the female singer in the catchy The Chainsmokers hit, “Closer.” Although this collaboration got her more fans, the 23-year-old American singer-songwriter can surely stand alone as an artist. Before being a popstar, Halsey was known as Ashley Nicolette Frangipane and she used to post her covers on social media until she was discovered by a record company.

With her unique voice and style, the singer quickly amassed millions of fans all over the world. This month, her lucky Filipino fans will get to see her live as a part of her Hopeless Foundation Kingdom World Tour. Besides her new songs, she is expected to include a few or her older songs such as “Colors,” “Ghost,” and “New Americana.”

How to get to Kia Theater: Take the LRT-2 or MRT-2 and alight at the Araneta Center Cubao Terminal Station. Walk along Aurora Boulevard and turn right to General Aguinaldo Avenue. Make a left turn to arrive at the Kia Theatre.


3. WORKSHY

The duo Workshy will be coming to Manila for a one-night-only concert of nostalgic fun. The London-based band was formed during the 80s, and they still continue to produce music up to the present. As a matter of fact, their last album was released last 2017.

Some of their notable songs during the 80s include “Fascination,” “In This Neighborhood,” and “Trouble Mind.” They also released popular covers of “I Say A Little Prayer,” “It’s Too Late,” and “If I Ever Lose This Heaven.”

How to get to The Theatre at Solaire: Ride the MRT to Taft Avenue Station. Ride a jeepney heading to SM Mall of Asia and from there wait for a Solaire free shuttle. The Theater at Solaire can be accessed via the drop-off area via The Shoppes and Theatre parking area.


4. Season of Gfriend in Manila

Super Junior’s return to Manila last June 30 was a success, and this August, the girls of Gfriend will take over. Gfriend was formed in 2015 and in the span of three years, the six-member girl group has released a total of six mini albums and one full album. Some of their popular singles include “Summer Rain,” “Me Gustas Tu,” “Love Whisper,” and “Time for the Moon Night.”

This will be the first Manila concert for the girl group and Eunha, Sowon, Yerin, Yuju, Umji, and SinB are excited to meet their Filipino fans.

5. Annekulit: Promise, Last Na 'to!

Being one of the Philippines’ it girls, Anne Curtis maintained a reputation for not being just a pretty face. The glam woman can act, dance, host, and be a fitness junkie all at the same time. While many aspire to have a life like Anne, the actress herself admits defeat to one area: singing. Still, despite being called tone deaf by her critics, Anne Curtis ignores disapprovals and sings to her heart’s content. Even if her vocal prowess is not as impressive as those of other singers in the industry, her confidence and positive mindset on her own flaw made her fans love her more.

In her AnneKulit concert, she will perform in front of her fans as she celebrates her 21st anniversary in the industry. Anne will be joined on stage by special guests.

6. Chance The Rapper Live in Manila

Manila will be one of the stopovers of Grammy award-winner Chance The Rapper in his Asian tour. Chance has collaborated with big names in the music scene such as Kanye West, Cardi B, Justin Bieber, and DJ Khaled. This marks the first time that the young rapper will be touring Asia, and his August 22 concert is also his first in Manila as well.

Most of Chance’s fans are excited to hear live the songs from his critically-acclaimed album Coloring Book, such as “No Problem” and “All Night.”

7. Mix 2.1 - Tom Misch + Vancouver Sleep Clinic

Being young and talented are just some of the things that Tom Misch and Vancouver Sleep Clinic have in common. These two acts will join forces and take over the August stage of Karpos Live’s series of shows following July’s lineup of HONNE and Anderson Paak.

Tom Misch hails from London, and he began his career by producing his own music in his bedroom. Aside from his smooth voice, his fans also love him for versatility, as he has a musical style that ranges from chill beats to hip-hop. Meanwhile, Vancouver Sleep Clinic is an Australian group that produces ambient indie pop songs. Their songs were used in popular TV series such as Beauty and the Beast, Awkward, Teen Wolf, Reign, Arrow, Suits, The Good Doctor, and The Vampire Diaries.

How to get to ABS-CBN Vertis Tent: Ride the MRT to North Avenue Station. Enter Trinoma and exit to Mindanao Avenue. From there, walk towards Ayala Vertis North, where the ABS-CBN Vertis tent is located.


8. Ogie Alcasid 30th

Calling all titos and titas (uncles and aunts) of Manila: one of the most prominent figures during your childhood, Ogie Alcasid, will be celebrating his 30th year in show business this year. Over these 30 years, Ogie did not just dominate the airwaves with certified hits like “Nandito Ako” (Here I Am), he was also seen on the small and silver screen as a comedic actor and host, thus making him a household name in the process.

In his show, Ogie will retell his journey through series of songs and stories. He will also be joined by special guests.

9. Why Don’t We: The Invitation Tour Live In Manila

Just like Gfriend and Chance The Rapper, this will be the first time that the boys of Why Don’t We would perform for their Filipino fanboys and fangirls. Despite their age, Why Don’t We has an impressive record to date. Dubbed as one of the fastest growing bands and one of pop music’s biggest breakout stories, their total Youtube channel exceeds 145 million views and has gotten over 1.5 million subscribers in a span of one year! While that’s an impressive achievement on its own, the boyband also has 120 million global audio streams and a total of 2.4 million Instagram followers.

How to get to Samsung Hall: Ride the MRT-3 to Ayala Station. Take a BGC East Route bus and alight at the Market! Market! bus station. SM Aura is just beside the station, and Samsung Hall is the dome-shaped area located at the rooftop of the mall.


10. SOULJA

Besides the fact that all their names start with the letter J, what else do Jaya, Jay-R, and Jason Dy have in common? Their incredible R&B and soul sound, of course! Their collaboration, called “Soulja,” will lead the trio to their first concert together this August 30.

The group will perform some of the top hits from various decades with a touch of the “Soulja” flavor. While they’re individually applauded for their skills, it will be refreshing to witness the reputable singers get together for the love of R&B and music.

Tips for purchasing tickets and watching the show:

  • Some shows make last-minute changes due to circumstances, so be updated by following the social media accounts of the performer or the event organizers.
  • To secure a ticket for a popular act, reserve early.
  • Avoid traffic and get to the venue early by leaving an hour earlier than your intended time. If you have a car and want to get the best parking spots, this would also be useful.
  • Arriving early also ensures better seats in shows with free seating.
  • Practice basic courtesy by not taking reserved seats.
  • Always keep an eye on your personal belongings.
  • Before planning your OOTD for the show, check the dress code of the venue, if any.
  • Follow the rules and regulations, doing so won’t get you into trouble and other inconveniences.
