Every May, the Philippines celebrate National Heritage Month. This aims to raise consciousness, respect, and love for the country’s culture and history. This year’s theme for National Heritage Month, Heritage: Change and Continuity, emphasizes the dynamic nature of heritage and preservation as fields constantly change and innovate. It also highlights the enduring legacies of Filipino traditions amidst rapidly evolving national and global contexts.

In line with this, you might want to know more about our country’s heritage and explore the various heritage sites in Manila with Renacimiento Manila. This cultural organization advocates conserving Metro Manila's heritage sites and the revival of Old Manila.


Renacimiento Manila – Heritage Walk – National Heritage Month, Renacimiento Manila

During the recent Tondo Heritage Walk, Alex Avila of Republica Filipina Reenactment Group discussed the role of Tondo during the 1896 Revolution and the Filipino American War of 1899. The group also went to the iconic Tondo Church.

By their name itself, Renacimiento Manila or Rebirth of Manila, this organization’s goal is to conserve and educate the current and future generations about the heritage sites of Manila and their beauty. They currently organize heritage walks to achieve this goal.

Renacimiento Manila's heritage walks started back in October 2021. This heritage walk aims to bring people closer to Manila’s heritage, history, culture, and concerns. Renacimiento Manila's heritage walks were divided into District or Area and Thematic.

District or Area Walks include Binondo Walk, Intramuros Walk, Escolta Walk, Quiapo Walk, Lawton-Arroceros Walk, Tondo Walk, and San Nicolas Walk. This heritage walks highlight stories and people in a specific district or area in Manila.

Renacimiento Manila emphasized the history, heritage, and environment of the areas near the Pasig River during the Pasig River Heritage Appreciation Walk.

Thematic Walks include the Pasig River Heritage Appreciation Walk, Lakad Pamana: Noli & Fili Walk, Seven Churches of Old Intramuros Walk, and Mass Transit Tour. This heritage walks focus on themes that cut across several areas of Manila.

Just recently, Renacimiento Manila held a Quiapo Heritage Walk, bringing people to Calle Hidalgo, which sits at the heart of Quiapo's heritage district. The Quiapo Heritage Walk focuses on this part of Manila which still has traces of the Spanish colonial period with its several surviving bahay na bato structures.

Renacimiento Manila also recently had its first Ermita Heritage Walk exploring several layers of history, from Marian images in pandan shrines to neoclassical and mission-style architecture and from seaside mansions and promenades to towering hotels and the horrors of war.
