PSA: Extension Cords and Power Strips Are Now Allowed in Carry-On Bags

Extension cords and power strips are now considered carry-on items.

FYI, air passengers, extension cords, and power strips are now allowed in carry-on bags starting May 15.

The Office of Transportation Security (OTS) recently announced that air passengers can now bring power strips and extension cords in carry-on bags. This policy took effect on May 15, pending the review of the OTS Prohibited Items List.

The Office of Transportation Security has demonstrated its commitment to passenger satisfaction by revising its policy in response to feedback. This update aligns with the Department of Transportation’s guidance for providing seamless travel experiences.

“OTS strives to improve its policies to provide balance between security and passenger convenience in line with Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista’s guidance to provide a comfortable, accessible, safe, sustainable, affordable, and seamless travel for all,” a statement from the OTS.

Extension cords were previously allowed in checked-in luggage, while items like batteries, e-cigarettes, and power banks are allowed in carry-on baggage.

Meanwhile, these items are also allowed in checked-in baggage: guns, firearms, discharge projectiles, objects with sharp points, worker tools, and blunt instruments.

Explosives and incendiary devices like pyrotechnics, fuel, etc., are not allowed on flights.
