Southern Luzon and the rest of the Philippines will be extra busy this week due to the national elections, Labor Day, Eid Al-Fitr, and a possible COVID-19 surge. Health concerns remain in most areas under CALABARZON—which many areas are currently under Alert Level 1.

Lockdown News: The majority of CALABARZON areas are under Alert Level 1 until April 30

CALABARZON provinces—except Quezon Province—are currently under Alert Level 1 until the end of April. Quezon Province is currently under Alert Level 2 [1].

Depending on a surge, these alert level statuses in CALABARZON may change as May approaches.

ICU capacities increased in Cavite

The threat of a possible new COVID-19 surge urged the provincial government of Cavite to increase intensive care unit (ICU) capacities in all vital areas in the province, Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla said.

Remulla adds that the key areas with increased ICU capacities include Bacoor, Dasmariñas, and Imus, a few of the biggest cities in Cavite [2].

In addition to the increase in ICU capacities, the Cavite local government will coordinate with the Department of Health (DOH) due to the planned second booster shot drive during the second week of May.

DOH: COVID-19 surge is not a cause for concern

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire affirms that the possible COVID-19 this coming May is not a cause of concern due to the lack of increased hospital admissions.

DOH adds that they’re closely monitoring several areas and regions showing favorable growth rates over the past few weeks [3].

The rollout for the second booster shot begins in the Philippines.

DOH also began distributing second doses of COVID-19 vaccine booster shots in the Philippines last April 25, starting with the immunocompromised population [4].

The eligible immunocompromised individuals should be only 18 years old and above. They should also receive their first booster dose at least three months before. As for the list of medical conditions eligible for the vaccine, DOH has yet to release the complete list.

Vaccine brands will be Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Sinovac.

Holiday News: May 1 is Labor Day; May 3 is Eid al-Fitr

May 1 is Labor Day in the Philippines—which landed on a Sunday. In addition, May 3 is Eid al-Fitr—a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan.
